Born in the late 19th century, abstract painting was linked to its time, witnessing the changes in society of that time. Criticized by classical art movements, "abstract" artists have persevered in their creative universe, even set against the rules of the art of the moment.

Abstraction is opposed to figuration. Figurative art is what can be observed in most museums: artworks composed of a subject, characters, a setting, while an abstract composition shows nothing directly understandable.

In fact, abstract painting does not represent anything in particular, that is to say that its content is not only to look at, but to feel, to discover with ones emotions.

Visual language that speaks to the senses and to the imagination, it allows a multiple interpretation of the artwork. Everyone can feel different emotions and the interpretations of the sensations that the artist wanted to convey are as numerous as the spectators who watch the artwork.

With abstract painting, each person creates with the artwork a link of its own. There is no imitation of reality, the artist does not try to reproduce something, but only to pass on his emotions.

Three great styles of abstraction have been identified: geometric abstraction, lyrical abstraction and decorative abstraction. The first one is the most widespread, in which lines and colors must be the structural basis of the artwork, it is the so-called "cold" abstraction. The second one is freer, it is the direct expression of individual emotion. As opposed to the first one, this lyrical abstraction is called "warm". Finally, the third style has the sole purpose of being aesthetic, with no particular search for emotions.

Street art has also allowed urban artists to show their talents in the field of abstract achievements, because street art is a vast reservoir of creations with unlimited styles. Many graffiti artists have made their creations evolve towards abstract art, which allows them to retranscribe their ideas, their emotions, their messages by giving free course to their desires, without having specific rules to respect. Street art has allowed them to create the foundations of their artistic creations of today, and often the techniques acquired during these years are used to create original abstract artworks.

Urban art is now an art in its own right, which disrupts established rules and becomes one of the pillars of contemporary art. But the discussion remains open.
